At this point in the news cycle it would be hard not to be influenced by what’s going on in US politics and the economy. Interestingly enough a lot of the sites that I found useful this week had a nod to those issues. There’s tons of statistical data out there that should make things easier but is that really the case? Behind that information are the stories – is it easy to find a truthful pov on the news that reflect those stories? I dunno if we’re at the end or the beginning stages where things get clearer but I do know that there’s a lot to have an opinion on. Till next week…

I kind of have a luv hate relationship with ffffound – there’s cool stuff to look at, but after a while it all looks the same. But every once in a while you can find a person that’s got a great curatorial eye for design and typography. That’s why I’m pointing you to check out http://ffffound.com/home/litherland/found/ collection. Caren Litherland is the person behind those finds and is also a friend. It wasn’t until recently that she mentioned casually that she had stuff up. I think a site like ffffound is a great venue for her as she’s not a blogger yet can display really cool finds.

One of the things that I take for granted each week as I post my collection that I’ve called Link Drop is that people are coming to my site to read this. If you’re following this post from a rss reader you have my apologies – the code to get Link Drop is a bit of a hack to say the least. It probably doesn’t look that nice – keep in mind that this site is still a work in progress. So if you are reading this post from your fav. rss reader today, before you close it down maybe check out the links via the blog – you might be surprised.

This week has a bit of everything, between seeing people’s awesome places, learning how to make a lot of cash via the blog (nope – no advertising for me just yet), maps and just smart observations there’s an eclectic mix. Did the last week seem to guy by quicker than last week’s or was it just me?

There are some benefits to working in SoHo aside from dodging tourists. I just saw Banksy in action on Broadway & Howard St. I caught the tail end of the the piece going up just before it started to pour rain which was kind of fitting considering the subject matter.

With the economy as it is at the moment, I thought the above poster was quite topical that I saw last night as I walked to the Lazarides Gallery New York (ok show btw). It’s a strange time, having dinner in the Meatpacking district, some restaurants were full while others were dead on a Sunday night. More noticeable for me inside my 60 floor apartment is the speed of the elevators. They’re faster, fewer people inside the elevator, and stop at less floors. My guess that people have been moving out and heading back to their original cities. The people that have a number of contingency plans will survive and probably find themselves in a better spot, however those that freeze up might not do so well.

You know the week has gone by quickly when Thursday feels like Tuesday – that’s sort of how this week’s Link Drop feels. There are so many posts and comments that it would take me a month to read everything and post the relevant stuff. Up until now it’s been pretty easy for me to find something about a topic and link back to a “source”. This weeks Link Drop is kind of interesting for me b/c there’s a lot of people w/ links that I’m friends with. I didn’t start off the week w/ a strategy of collecting stuff from everyone I know – it’s just that there’s a lot of people doing interesting stuff at the moment. If there’s one common theme among all of them is that even if I didn’t know them I’d still be throwing them all up. Kind of motivating to say the least.

Orouni - Jump Out The Window

A couple days ago I was passed on an email from the musician Orouni mentioning his album Jump Out The Window. The music is pretty good but what I found even more interesting was that he was wanting to tell me about the illustrator that did the cover art for the album. The cover comes from Natsko Seki who’s got a great feel for things. I really like the style and feel – check it out for yourself at www.natsko.com.

When I asked Orouni about how the project and collaboration worked – this was his reply “basically, I’m a big fan of design blogs and one day, I discovered Natsko’s work on one of them and found it really amazing. I hadn’t finished my album (Jump Out The Window) at all but I knew I wanted her to design its cover. I thought there were many similarities between her visual style and my music, and it’s important for me that an artwork have some interaction with the sound of the album.

I didn’t really dream about her accepting, though. When she said yes, I really got crazy, I was so happy! Then I told her how I imagined the cover (subject, colors, etc.), and she started to draw a rough sketch. Then she made the whole artwork (CD, booklet…) and I’d like to say it was great to work with her because whenever I asked her to make some changes, she was ok with it, and it helped a lot to have a cover that we both liked. So I’m very happy that we worked together, I love the cover and people seem to do too. Natsko is really one of my favorite illustrators!”

On my last Link Drop post I posted a link to the Gothamist about David Bryne’s bike racks. I thought it was an interesting idea but didn’t give it too much attention about seeing them in person. However being asked about it on twitter I thought that maybe I should. So over the long weekend I mapped out my best route of attack for seeing all of the bike rack designs. I thought it would be a great way to see different parts of the city that I probably wouldn’t have made a destination of seeing. Plus I was hoping that I’d come across some interesting stuff along the way to photograph.

I think a really motivated person could see all of the bike racks in one day – either on foot, bike or subway. For me though I didn’t want to dedicate one whole day, but put in a couple hours for three days. While I knew how to get to all of the locations it still felt like a scavenger hunt. There was a destination yet it still had the fun of discovering something new. One the first day I took Maddie w/ me for the walk. We went to the Olde Times Square (44th Street & 7th Avenue), the Jersey (9th Avenue and 39th Street) and the Chelsea (25th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues). Having never walked Maddie through Times Square nor something I like doing myself on a weekend it was an interesting experience. Maddie barked at a skateboarder and I got mad at the slow tourists. In any case we both did enjoy the walk.

The next day I took the train up to 110th street where I found the the first bike rack of the day. It was the Coffee Cup at Amsterdam Avenue between 110th and 111th Street. It was also the first bike rack that I saw being used as such which was good. So far all the racks where cool to look at, but I wasn’t sure how they actually worked. I also liked the location b/c it allowed me to walk the entire west side of Central Park to my next destination. I’d never taken the time to walk an entire side so I was curious to know how long that would take (40 minutes btw). After walking past Central Park I was headed to see the Ladies’ Mile (5th Avenue between 57th and 58th Streets). Once I took the image of the shoe I was headed towards MoMA (54th Street between 5th and 6th). What I thought would be the easiest bike rack to find ironically became the most difficult. On David Bryne’s map and website the location says it’s on 53rd street when it’s actually 54th street. After doing an entire lap around MoMA I felt pretty dumb – how could I have possibly not seen the Ear? It wasn’t until I started a loop the other way that I actually saw the rack. A street vendor was beside it and was blocking the view when I walked by it the first time. Having covered a lot of ground I decided to keep walking south past Washington Square park to find the fourth bike rack called the Villager (LaGuardia Place between Bleecker and West 3rd).

The goal nn the final day was to walk to Wall Street (Wall Street (North Side) between Pearl and Water Streets) and then take the train Williamsburg. Those two areas aren’t places that I visit often though I do find them fascinating whenever I end up there. The only catch w/ Wall St. is that I feel like I’m being watched b/c I’m carrying a camera. Almost every time I start going down the side streets I get mixed up and inevitabely get lost. That happened once again after I found the bike rack. I thought I was headed west back to Broadway but ended up get looped around a couple times. Of course I did end up back on track but it was kind of funny how some old habits are hard to shake off. If there was one place that needs more bike racks, it’s definitely where the Hipster(s) reside (Bedford & North 6th Street). There were so many bikes over there that any new poles or guitars acting as racks I think would be a welcome edition. After finding the bike rack and the last photo taken I had managed to cover a lot of miles on foot and my legs were happy to take the train back to Manhattan.

I thought the whole idea for the bike racks was a great idea. It seems a bit weird to read that they’re only going to be up for a year though. I’m sure the idea of customized bike racks isn’t new and I hope that more cities do stuff to encourage people to bike and give them space to park. I also noticed that each of the bike racks was close to the curb – maybe a foot or two from the road. What’s good about this is that the poles aren’t in front of anyone’s store or blocking any windows. I’m now back from vacation, walking to work and didn’t feel any effects of the summer weather I’m still trying to get used to. After hearing the authour of Crowdsourcing Jeff Howe speak at Electric Artists last night it was easy to make comparisons with some other quasi anthro/sociology books that you might find in the business or marketing section of a bookstore this year. The first would be Here Comes Everybody by Clay Shirky and to a lesser extent Buying In by Rob Walker. For me personally the most basic of the comparisons is that I’ve now seen all three of them speak. Clay talked by himself at Daylife where I work, Rob was interviewed by Fast Company with PSFK and Jeff spoke at Electric Artists and was interviewed by Marc Schiller. In all three cases the Q & A afterwards was fairly flat. No one would dispute that Clay’s a passionate speaker but for the Rob and Jeff events it became interesting to see where the dialogue was going to be directed with the interviewer. By the time each of the books has been written, printed and delivered a lot of the themes aren’t exactly new. After hearing Rob talk I didn’t really feel that I had heard anything that new while last night I did end up leaving Jeff’s talk with feeling smarter then I walked in.

For the talk last night, some of the main business’s that Jeff referenced were Threadless, iStock photo and Dell. I’ve never bought a Dell nor follow anything that they do so I wasn’t really able to relate to that part of the discussion. I have used iStock photo and as a creative I’ve always hated the idea that people send in free illustration work that a shirt company is making money off of. I’ve always seen it as spec work but these days you rarely hear anyone complain about that – so maybe I’m in the minority that has an issue. In any case, the “crowd” is looking for a task to do and those companies all found a way to bring people into the fold.

Keep in mind that crowd is not some mindless mob – in the case of Doritos and their contest to give airtime for a Superbowl commercial, a majority of the entries came from other professionals. In essence a hybrid of pro-am people that were taking their work in a different direction. You may have also heard of Crowdsourcing b/c of the book contest to design the cover. You can check out the finalists from the UK at www.coversourcing.co.uk/top. What was interesting to hear is that the American version did not publish a cover from outsiders but the publisher decided what was going to work while in the UK an entry was selected. Which was right? Hard to say until the number of books that were sold can be figured out. One thing that became clear is that it’s hard to replicate a successful crowd interaction w/ a business if the conditions aren’t there. Walmart tried to fake it for a while and was called out on it. It seemed like for things to work companies weren’t following a scripted plan and had the confidence to let things open up in unique manner and have a dialogue.

REVIEW PART ONE: Design Mind from Frog Design

If you’ve spent any amount of time on your favourite design blogs lately, you’ve probably read a post or two mentioning the latest issue of Design Minds from Frog Design. Typically the blog post will point to the Design Mind’s website. Number 8 is the first print version while the previous seven issues have just been on the web. I could be mistaken but I’m suspecting this issue has received a lot of attention because it became a print magazine. But isn’t print dying? While I have been thinking about that question for some time – it became a bit more tangible after I received the actual print copy from Mai who is spending the summer at Frog in San Francisco. A couple days before that she sent me a message asking if I would be interested in a copy (more info about getting your own copy HERE), and of course I said yes! Back to the question at hand for me. For the first part of my design career I spent one foot on the print side while the other foot on the digital side. For the last two years almost all the design that I’ve designed has been displayed on a screen of some sort. Having the nicely designed magazine in hand I thought it would be interesting to talk about the print and website in parallel and to see what I could learn from it.

This review is more about the function of each medium as opposed to the actual content – that post will come at a later date. As ugly and frustrating as many websites can be, the reach to people is hard to ignore. For example if I were to send any of my content from DesignNotes to a person via print it would be an enormous expense. The same content on the blog can be published fast and reach a world wide audience very inexpensively. The drawback is that I’m somewhat unhappy w/ the design template (expect a redesign). It’s also hard for me not to focus more on the communication side of the web since people can add comments. The advantage that print carries is that it’s tangible and typically tells a story in an understandable linear narrative while a site is more of a grab bag of content that expects the person to understand what they want to get from the site.

So w/ Design Minds – what’s better, the magazine or site? The cop out response is that it depends on what you’re looking for. If the content was just a magazine with out digital presence, a lot fewer people would have known about it. If the content was just like the other seven issues that were just digital – some people would have covered and read it. But maybe w/ slightly less attention. It’s really a circular argument that ends w/ the response of it depends.

On the functional side I pulled a couple examples to look at. The first is the table of contents and how each is represented in it’s format. For me the website does a slightly better job because each article is reflected w/ an image of the content while the reader is expected to read or skim the print version via words. You also only need to click once while the fingers need to flip through – not a big deal of course.

The second example is a bit of a surprise on who does a better job. It’s a city guide – in this example it happens to be San Francisco. Between the listings and potential for interactivity the web site should have been better. But it was just a listing w/ no links or visual map to show distance between each of the locations. The printed version on the other hand has a pretty simple map that shows where everything is.

In the final example that I’ll mention I compare one of the main stories w/ Erik Spiekermann. An obvious question is if you’re going to spend ten quality minutes reading the above article what’s your choice going to be? Almost everyone is going to pick the magazine for both the tangibles and intangibles. You can hold it, and to some degree have the luxury of reading something not on screen. But what would be faster? I find that I can read something two or three times faster on screen, plus if I have a point to make – I can post a comment. It all comes down to a person’s preference and what is important to them. Of course this review didn’t mention content too much. Like I mentioned previously that will come once I’ve spent some quality time with the magazine.

People interpreting news events and information

Search terms after Earthquake Rattles Southern California Jul 29, 2008

For a couple hours yesterday when people were wondering about news about the earthquake in California, Google Hot Trends showed a list of their top searches. Click HERE for a larger version of the image. Less than 6 or 7 search terms out of 100 didn’t relate to the earthquake which meant that over 90% of what people wanted more info about at the same time was related to the earthquake. I don’t follow search terms that much but from time to time I’ll see small clusters on trends that relate – but nothing like that. If anything a listing like that shows how people interpret news for themselves – no single keyword, but how the events relate to their own personal motivation. In some respects it’s an information architects worst nightmare, but tons of opportunities for interaction design to deliver how people want more info on a topic.

At the point in the reblogging game if a tech savy band band puts out a video, why not make it easy to share, send or embed? As much as I’m a fan of REM’s new video from Crush called Man-Sized Wreath I’m scratching my head for a flawed strategy to distribute the video. I can only see it on their respective sites – this isn’t 2001 anymore.

In any case – the video is a very satisfying visual watch. I’ve never played the role of motion designer but can still appreciate some of the details w/ out getting lost in the quick transitions or spinning things that usually accompany “flashy” videos. I also appreciated the fact that REM didn’t feel like they needed to be in every shot so they allowed designers to create a story. Before anyone got on stage last night for PKNY5 I said to myself that I feel for the presenters. I don’t think any of them were expecting two solid floors of people. I had been to one other Pecha Kucha in Brooklyn last year which was smaller in scale. Comparing the two events I’ve come to some simple conclusions. Presenters should come with three talks prepared. One in their ideal environmental condition (perfect sound, visuals work – everyone sitting and able to see), one that relies more on their auditory (no one can see anything, everyone is standing and moving around), and one where you throw out what you had prepared and react to the audience in front of you. Of all the six minute presenters there was probably three that I can really remember along with a couple phrases here and there thrown in for good measure. I’m not sure if I remember Andrew Andrew’s talk b/c I’ve seen stickers w/ that name on the street or that they seemed best suited for the venue. My favourite acronym mentioned by another speaker was BBT – bombs, blood and tits, and I really don’t think I agree that the periodic chart is the most important piece of graphic design as was suggested by the last speaker of the night, though I might be quoting that wrong. The event wasn’t bad by any means but I actually got more out of just bumping into people that I didn’t know and hearing what they’re up to. It’s too bad some of them weren’t on stage b/c it would have been interesting for them to talk about what they’re finding is interesting today.

It’s now the weekend, you could do something interesting or be stuck in an elevator for almost two days

I was never a patient person and that has only been accelerated since moving to NYC a couple years ago. I hate waiting more than a couple minutes for an elevator. Imagine being stuck in an elevator for a couple minutes, maybe twenty or thirty minutes. What would you do – I’m pretty sure I’d go crazy. Well the above video shows what happens when one man gets stuck in an elevator. Aside from waiting pains I’ve also been in an elevator that dropped a bunch of floors quite quickly. I can’t remember the exact number of floors but I think it may have been at least ten – for more stories like that and the above video there’s a related article from the New Yorker HERE.

Playing with Twitter’s Character Count and Discovering How Easy it Would be to Turn Flickr into a Blog Platform

Yesterday I posted a bit of a strange post mentioning the video http://www.hadlowpro.com I saw via eating sandwiches. My original intention was just to mention it on twitter and leave it at that. But when I started typing away I wondered how i could reduce the character count as much as possible. By deleting the space in between words and other symbols I squeezed the line a bit. I also used tinyurl with the via link. So in the end I was able to reduce the character count a bit though the second test was how would it look? By comparing a before and after, the normal spaced version reads and looks better, however the one that reads easier is also a lot easier to ignore. The one long line is different, there’s enough contrast and an understandable system to read the line of text.

I was also curious to see how that twitter post would play out on flickr which is where I originally hosted the images and how it would transfer to an actual blog post. I was actually surprised how well it worked on flickr and not surprised that it was just ok as a real blog post. Before I had thought of doing this test I would never had guessed that flickr could work out as well as it did as a publishing tool, not just a place to upload and share images.

Design and the Elastic Mind

While I have seen I Want You To Want Me project at MoMA I haven’t actually interacted with it. However after watching the above video and seeing a similar presentation about the installation via AIGA NY Designers Remixed series a couple thoughts come to mind. I would luv to know how long the project took and how they sustained their energy though out. The amount of work that it would have taken to pull it off was quite amazing.

A Black and White Issue?

While I strongly disagree with some of the sentiment from PSFK’s post Olympics: Do We Burn The Nikes First, Or The Cool Blogs? it also made me consider some other questions in regards to the Olympic Games in Beijing. That question is that if you plan to watch a moment of the Olympics, purchase anything from a corporate sponsor of the games or even follow who wins and looses are you implicitly supporting what a number of protesters are trying to bring to the attention of the world? If you are protesting the Olympics in Beijing yet choose to do any of the following that I mention above is it somewhat hypocritical to criticize others? Is it possible to have it both ways or is everyone responsible to some degree? All comments are welcome as I’m having a hard time balancing the pros and cons myself.

Over at Daylife HQ’s this morning in SoHo (444 Broadway for anyone wanting to visit) the building had a fire alarm. At the time I was listening to Portishead in Portishead quite loudly so for the first couple of seconds I thought the siren was part of a song. Once I realized that wasn’t quite the case I said my goodbye’s on IM and proceeded from the top floor to go outside. Hanging out on the street with a couple other people from Daylife I noticed something interesting. Neither of the buildings that were connected to us had to evacuate. More to the point there was a shoe store that was half in our building and half in another. The even bigger picture was that the entire block was essentially connected. If there had been an actual fire I wonder how the other interconnected buildings would have known that there was a fire? I know absolutely nothing about fire alarm systems but I would have hoped that if one alarm had tripped the buildings connected would have sounded the same alarm.

While I do mention my iPhone a lot on DesignNotes I was happy to see that once again I could take some pictures and upload them to flickr ASAP. Along that same line if there had been some sort of real disaster and people were indeed wondering if I was ok and the cell/wifi towers were working I could send some information both visually and wordy via email, sms that would end up in email, flickr, twitter, facebook and friendfeed in a matter of seconds. Small comfort now if I look back and think that only a couple years ago would have been difficult to do w/ out a laptop and a digital camera.

Attending MIND08: The Design and the Elastic Mind Symposium

With the likelihood of me planting a garden being slim to none as I live in apartment, I wasn’t entirely sure why I would spend a Friday night listening to a talk at the NYPL about Edible Estates. What I didn’t realize was of all the green or sustainable talks that I’ve been to that were somehow related to design, this one came closest to presenting how unsustainable some of our living patterns currently are. The talk was framed around the book EDIBLE ESTATES: Attack on the Front Lawn by Fritz Haeg who talked about the book while Peter Sellars, Dolores Hayden, Frederick Kaufman and Shamim Momin all presented examples along that theme.

What seemed to be different about this talk compared to other lectures that I’ve been to was in the social role and how that could impact things. I’ve always taken the front yard for granted and if you actually were going to have a garden it would be in the backyard. But my reversing the yard to have the garden in the front, the public interaction is much more of a possibility. Of course growing your own food also reduces the energy needed to live. But with every action is a reaction and gardening is no different. One unpopular idea brought up by Frederick Kaufman was that for these gardens to really not leave any type of footprint without using pesticides or lots of water – they might need to use genetically modified seeds which the crowed hissed at. Another myth that I enjoyed hearing dispelled was about Jane Jacobs and her idealistic 19th century ideals of community by Dolores Hayden.

As with an open mic at the end of the discussion, the audience’s first couple of questions were a bit off topic to the talk at hand. Probably the best question as I was leaving and unfortunately did not hear the entire response to was about laws and if any had been broken by having a garden in a front yard. It sounded like none had been up to this point. Bringing it back to an urban dweller like myself I still did have a hard time thinking that the concept would take off considerably, but as a starting point for further discussion I thought it did a good job.

Shortly after Valentines Day I noticed an interesting scribe of Love Me on a friends flickr site. A couple days after that I saw a different one in SoHo on Mercer St. Since it wasn’t that many days after that luv holiday I thought the person may have just been in a festive mood a left it at that. But last night I saw a new one or at least new to me and while it’s no longer February it still seems fitting. Who doesn’t enjoy the words “Love Me”? That question also got me thinking, what if shirts with the same mark started popping up. I made the above image for illustrative purposes. It wouldn’t be that hard to sell them through a site like Etsy and the shirts would have a decent back story to go along with the creative script. From that scenario I jumped around a bit – what if the person selling the shirts wasn’t the actual artist that was the one making the words outside – would there be any recourse? What if the person outside was the person selling the shirt – they’ve just admitted to a small and lovely crime. Not a huge deal but those kinds of questions got me thinking. Anyhow – I don’t have any background story aside from what I see when I walk through SoHo. If anyone else can help me with more story on the Love Me thing, please drop a line in the comments.

Publishing DesignNotes on a near daily basis over the last couple of years has helped me consider design in a manner that you can’t learn from just reading about it. By being proactive it forces you to always keep your eyes open. When you happen to flip a page and realize that you have no idea what you just read that’s way tougher to do when it’s you writing. Publishing DesignNotes also allows me to talk to interesting people that I otherwise would never had met either through email or actually meeting them in person.

Last night I met w/ Matthew Waldman who’s the founder of Nooka (see watch above). I could go on and on about what I think about the watches but if you’ve been following this blog for any length of time you already know that. We had been exchanging emails every once in a while and since his office is pretty close to where I live it seemed weird not meet face to face. It was interesting to see the studio where everyone works (hi Yumi) and see the collection of watches, products and other characters that are being created. One of the things that I learned about UPS that I had never considered was that the trucks at dusk are kind of invisible – or at least that’s what Matthew thinks as he’s almost been hit by a couple. It was also interesting to hear the development of the company and how things have evolved. I saw a really cool wallet that they’re developing that fits in pretty nicely with some of the other watches. We also talked about perhaps doing a joint thing with DesignNotes. Nothing extreme of course and way too soon to mention anything more then that – but stay tuned.

As mentioned in a previous post or two that I’m watching the US Primaries from the sidelines (ok – so are independents, but…) b/c I’m from Canada I no less find the visual communications of both parties and candidates to be fascinating. Between posters, logos, typefaces and branding there’s a lot to look at. But there’s one thing that until now hasn’t been talked about. There’s the design of all the collateral but what’s the printing side of this? Anne Stewart has started a blog at the printing company that she works at. While the blog is quite new it still has some interesting insights into printing and politics though that isn’t the only thing that is covered. I asked Anne if she’s ever concerned about what to post since it’s part of a business. Her response was kind of refreshing. “One of the great things about the blog I write for Hotcards is that I have pretty much total freedom in terms of my content choices. They don’t want the blog to just shamelessly promote the business, they want it to be a place for people to come together and talk about print and design. So, I can’t be wildly obscene or anything, but they don’t mind stuff like political conspiracy theories or criticism of the oft-times monstrous nature of advertising.” Check it out for yourself at www.hotcards.com/blog/

The Age of Persuasion

Over the last couple of years people in Canada have asked me if I’ve ever heard of the CBC Radio One program The Age of Persuasion. I would respond with yes I’ve heard of it, but no I haven’t listened to it. I’ve some how always been doing something around 11:30 Saturday morning without a radio within earshot. I’ve even emailed them asking when their going to podcast their show like most of the other programs on the CBC. At the moment they still aren’t podcasting the program but they’re doing the next best thing. They’re streaming it from the website – so it’s sort of archived and available to listen to when people choose to. I find it amusing that if you still want to listen to the show you have to be connected to a machine and not a portable listening to device.

The reason why I haven’t actually described the program yet is that I had known about the show by reputation but not by the actual content until I started listening to the program this week. The simplest way to describe it is if you’re in a creative field you’ll appreciate how Terry O’Reilly spins his narrative of advertising that is typically rooted in some sort of historical context. Thankfully it doesn’t go into a preechy Canadian way that some radio programs do that seem to come out of the same school of thought as Naomi Klein’s book No Logo. 3 Sites That Had Me Thinking

There were a couple new sites this week that piqued my interest that I hadn’t seen before. How I actually came across the three also speaks to the miscellaneous ways I’m finding information. One site was passed on to me directly through delicious, one site came up at a discussion group that I participated in and the third came from a subscribed mail list. I didn’t get any of this stuff from mainstream media outlets or magazines which is kind of interesting in itself. While the three sites all serve different tasks they all kind of make scanning a lot of information quite quickly. If you’ve read the book Everything is Miscellaneous by David Weinberger you’ll know what I mean – if you haven’t read the book be sure to check it out.

Street fashion photos from street style blogs is exactly what the title claims to be. It’s feeding a number of fashion blogs and the images are collected by tags and cities. You can go visit New York to Vancouver to Oslo extremely fast. Once you click on a photo is sends you to the original blog post from their site. www.feedshion.com

Instapaper for some reason doesn’t work on my mac firefox browser – so keep that in mind when I talk about this site, if you’re on a pc it probably does work. The simple idea is that while you’re jumping around from one to site to the next you might not have time to read the entire post. Instapaper has a button that you are supposed to be able to drag and drop on to your toolbar. Once you see something you want to save you click on the button that saves it to your own Instapaper page. Once you visit that page you have a couple options, you can read the story, skip the story or delete the story. The log in is incredible simple too – you’ll see what I mean when you try for yourself. www.instapaper.com

EveryBlock pulls public data to a new level. Depending on where you live there’s a lot of information that can be turned into some interesting facts. On top of that there’s a layer that maps things geographically. There’s a number of interesting categories that you may not think that has public data though apparently they do – like graffiti cleaned, building violations issued, restaurant inspections and fun things like Missed connections from craig’s list and photos being feed from flickr.
