Most lunch afternoons at work I try to take a couple minutes to walk around Soho seeing what’s going on. While I’m noticing certain patterns of people hanging outside of the coffee shops or eating food on stairs it’s far from boring. It’s also fun to pick out things that may have been in front of me for quite a while, yet took a regular Tuesday to notice. For instance today I’ve probably walked by Opening Ceremony a ton of times, and for quite a while they’ve had a vinyl sign with an outline of the US map. Today for the first time I noticed it had changed—maybe it’s new, though it could be weeks old. In any case I thought it was worth pointing out. There’s a number of visual plays going on that seem simple yet could have gone bad (which thankfully it didn’t.) The OC is echoing the name while contained in a somewhat familiar face pattern. The funky type isn’t taking itself too seriously while at the same time being unique enough that it’s not going to be knocked off anytime soon. That being good as they’re a block away from Canal St.

Link Drop for Saturday, September 5, 2009. Last Update: 12:16 PM ET http://designnotes.info/?p=1878 http://designnotes.info/?p=1878#comments Sat, 05 Sep 2009 16:11:45 +0000 http://designnotes.info/?p=1878 Link Drop Themes for Saturday September 5th, 2009

While this week may have seemed kind of slow news wise, there were a number of themes that I picked up on that suggest that they could keep popping up till the end of the year. There’s info flow in all it’s multiple ways and the politics that play out when that information is distributed. It’s a no brainer that people like looking at images, but how people find them and push them out to a larger audience is something to keep an eye on. It was amazing how Twitter was a key pivot for a lot of the connections. Search is no where to be found. For those familiar with Link Drop, I try to publish it on Fridays though they tend to happen more and more on Saturdays. So keeping that in mind I figured why not just keep it on Saturdays and see what happens. Though next weekend I’m in Boston so it should be interesting to see how I publish it there.

This was a bit of wake up call after earlier this week when the WWF tried to take back their poster. A number of blogs and news sites linked back to me because I had one of the few screen shots of the One Show showing the poster as a merit award winner. While it wouldn’t take much for a company to delete the image from my flickr account for their own purposes after reading this post. I’m going to keep multiple digital copies on different servers in case anything happens to one of the files.

I don’t usually post tips kind of stuff but I thought this was worth mentioning because of the character count, and it’s a much more human post to the one I link below from AlertBox. This week’s version of Link Drop has a healthy does of me at the beginning. When I read about other bloggers and their exploits, sometimes I think it’s cool to see, other times perhaps not. So if you’re in the perhaps not camp, please scroll quickly to link #4. Overall I came across a bit of everything, there’s lot’s of publishing stuff, both online and print. I think I keep coming back to that topic because it’s how people are broadcasting messages today, something we should all be in the business of. I also found it interesting how Armstrong integrated his message into a number of different outlets that again I think we can all learn from. Did I miss anything worth reading?

The one big theme that I missed on my note above for this week’s Link Drop was politics. It’s been a couple weeks since I really mentioned that much, and perhaps not surprisingly it’s tied closely to tech. Other tech. things that people interact with on a daily basis include Google, Twitter and Facebook. Surprisingly no iPhone stuff… People are also still trying to make sense of things so it’s natural that info design pops up from time to time. The only surprise mention is from Nooka where Matthew came back from Japan with some new toys. I’ve seen his collection previously which is quite impressive so I found his rational for what he brought back to be interesting.

This week’s edition of Link Drop has a heavy duty number of site that are related to visualization, though ironically I’m wondering if the idea is getting severely bloated? Another irony is that I’m starting to think is that while newspapers and logos are on their last legs, I think typography and more to the point typefaces are going to surge in quality—just throwing that out there… I’m sure there’s more to mention like how Daylife’s site should be checked out, but I’ll leave that for a future post…

Presenting The Sound Advice Project – the purity ring of anti-drug campaigns… and Bicycle Built for Two Thousand
I thought these were two good additions to what I had mentioned last week with Joshua Distler’s Music CD Labeling System. I really like the three dimensionality of the first one. A person could build a lot of interesting things off a system like that. The second sound visualizer is interesting to me because they put the power of Mechanical Turk into play which sort of leads to the next link below about dirt…

The week I came across a lot of posts that had tried to turn data into some meaningful data, usually with a diagram. Some were more successful than others as you’ll notice. UX was on my mind again, though I should throw out the question if you’re a designer how can it not be a consideration?

This is one of those design times that I do think should be taken note of. The last time I felt this way was when UPS introduced their new mark. This time a company, Tropicana in this case has gone back to their previous design which carried a lot of equity. I can’t recall this kind of pull back happening like this before. It’s kind of interesting to read how mainstream media outlets are talking about the story. Orange Bicycle at 42 and 6 ave
There was an interesting discussion after I posted this – unfortunately when I installed Disqus after the fact that comment stayed in the old database of comments. In effect the person was objecting to the commercialization of the idea of the Ghost Bike. At the time I was pretty much on the opposite side thinking that a company shouldn’t have to worry about worry such things. As I’ve walked a lot through the city and seen those white bikes out there, that person may have been correct with their objections.

There was three events that were sort of art, sort of design that I really enjoyed seeing. One was MoMA’s Design and Elastic Mind Exhibition, Murakami at the Brooklyn Museum and Buckminster Fuller at the Whitney. I would have luved to have blogged more about the last two exhibitions but since they don’t allow photography inside I’ll just mention that it’s a stupid policy that will hurt them more than what it will help. Banksy’s installations would be up there too in really good things to have seen now that I think about it.

I don’t understand why this hasn’t been fixed or updated. There’s so much potential for Google Hot Trends to be a go to source.

It’s not bad enough that everyone wants to be a designer, now they think they can art direct photos too.

I’m surprised that Apple never made a psd themselves so people could sketch out apps.

For all the chatter of sites that tagged brands, I think Dear Adobe changed the game more so than any other UGC site. If I was wanting to study site concepts for company’s, this is where I would start. And no, Adobe didn’t design the site.

There’s a saying about being lucky to be good, but you have to be good to be lucky. Sometimes it just helps being in the right place at the right time.

How I Find Good Stuff on the Web
This post kind of blew up things for me. The number of smart people that checked out my blog after this was pretty amazing. Hopefully I can build on that in the new year.

I’ve probably had more face to face conversations about this post than anything else I blogged about this year.

Allstate Front

I’ve been staring at the Allstate hands logo all year when a college football team has attempted a field goal or a point after. As product placement of a logo goes, it works pretty well. The hands catching the ball is an interesting combination game action and sponsor. The thing that I never considered until I saw the camera angle from behind the posts is that the logo works essentially the same. Sure the type doesn’t read in reverse, but their wordmark is what they’re recognized by which doesn’t distort when seen backwards.

Welchen Erinnerungswert haben Logos?

I was reminded of the strength of good design through its universal understanding of information. I came across a german language based design site that has two pdf downloads called Corporate Design. One pdf is about the shape of logos better known as form while the other takes on colour. Going through all the german written pages, I was still able to get the just of the process and steps that were being taken to understand some of the more known marks of the world. The diagrams broke down the shapes and made comparisons to colour evolution as shown on the two images above. The download for the two pdfs is at http://corporate-design-reihe.de/download.htm It’s a nice reference to go back upon when you’re trying to make complex information more understandable.
