Boxee’s iPhone Remote

After reading More Proof That The iPhone Is A Killer Living Room Remote all I can say is I couldn’t agree more. Obviously it was only a matter of time for the iPhone to be used for pushing other buttons around, but to see it in action is inspiring. It really opens up different types of navigating metaphors that previously would not have been imaginable with a static button click like every other remote out there.

I’ve only been experimenting with Boxee’s iPhone remote for about ten minutes so it’s hard not to gush over it. I’m surprised that the gesture mode is essentially one button. It works quite nicely but I’m kind of curious to see it evolve as people get used to it and start navigating with two fingers (think of how you can zoom into an image on the iphone). The only real issue I had was volume control. I kind of expected to have the ability to change the volume via the side buttons of the iPhone—which I wasn’t able to do. I also noticed that the volume was easily accessible through the button mode but not gesture.

Looks like I now should take a closer look at the book Designing Gestural Interfaces as things are finally getting started…

Great video. Just downloaded the app. Can't wait to try it out tonight. Love the gesture mechanism.
