I noticed one of those new bus shelters for NYC walking home on Saturday night on 5th Ave a couple blocks north of the Flatiron Building. What surprised me about the structures that were designed by Cemusa was how invisible they seemed. The combination of glass with the minimal silver metal structure allows for a lot of see through room. As the new structures replace the old ones, I wonder if anyone will notice? Having only seen one of the new shelters, I’d guess that people might not consciously be aware of the fact that things seem a bit cleaner down on the street level. Part of the replacement of the structures is not just the bus shelters, but those magazine kiosks too. Between those shopkeepers and taggers out there, it will be interesting to see how the new designs hold up to people’s desire to modify things.
